Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Ulcerative Colitis is a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and may present with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and blood or mucous in the stools
Crohn’s Disease is a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and may present with altered growth, altered stools, alongside other manifestations such as swollen joints, mouth ulcers or other non-gastrointestinal signs.
For both conditions blood tests and stool tests to look for infection and the presence of inflammation (stool calprotectin) can be helpful. The diagnosis will be made with further tests such as a gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
