Your First Appointment
Everything you need to know before visiting Dr Harveen Singh FRACP, paediatric gastroenterologist in Sydney.
Do I Need a Referral?
Yes, a current referral is strongly recommended. A referral from your GP or paediatrician is required to access Medicare rebates for specialist consultations. Your referral is valid for 12 months from a GP or 3 months from a specialist.
If you do not have a referral, you may still attend as a private patient (without Medicare rebates). Please call 02 9793 2170 to discuss your situation.
What your referral should include:
- Your child's full name, date of birth, and Medicare number
- A description of symptoms and reason for referral
- Relevant medical history and current medications
- Copies of any recent blood tests, imaging, or specialist letters
- Your GP's contact details for correspondence
GPs and paediatricians: Referrals can be sent by phone (02 9793 2170), fax (02 9793 2176), or email (info@childrensgutdr.com.au). For urgent referrals, please call directly.
Medicare & Fees
Dr Harveen Singh charges private rates. Medicare rebates apply when you have a current referral. The out-of-pocket gap fee varies depending on the type of consultation (new or review) and whether procedures are involved.
Please call 02 9793 2170 to enquire about current fees before your appointment. Payment is required at the time of consultation.
What to bring to your appointment:
- Referral letter from your GP or paediatrician
- Medicare card (and health fund card if applicable)
- Your child's immunisation history if relevant
- Any previous blood test results, X-rays, or specialist letters
- A list of current medications including doses
- Payment method (credit/debit card)
- A trusted support person (parent or guardian must be present for minors)
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Medical History
Dr Singh will take a detailed history of your child's symptoms, diet, bowel habits, and relevant medical and family history. Please allow 45–60 minutes for your first appointment.
Physical Examination
A thorough physical examination will be performed, including abdominal examination and assessment of growth (height and weight checked against growth charts).
Investigation Plan
Based on the history and examination, Dr Singh will recommend relevant investigations such as blood tests, stool tests, breath tests, or imaging. Further procedures such as gastroscopy or colonoscopy may be discussed if indicated.
Management Plan
You will receive a clear, personalised management plan including dietary advice, medications, and follow-up arrangements. A letter will be sent to your GP summarising the consultation.
Follow-up
Follow-up appointments are scheduled as clinically indicated. Many families are seen every 3–6 months, but this varies depending on the condition and treatment response.
Emergency Guidance
If your child develops an urgent new symptom between appointments, please call 02 9793 2170. For medical emergencies (severe pain, vomiting blood, difficulty breathing), attend your nearest emergency department.
