About Colonoscopy

A comprehensive diagnostic procedure designed specifically for children to examine the colon and detect any abnormalities.

Advanced Diagnostic Tool

A flexible tube with a camera at the end is used to examine your child's colon (large intestines) in detail, providing clear visualization of the digestive tract. This procedure is often used to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease and other digestive conditions.

Safe & Comfortable

Colonoscopy in children is performed under general anaesthetic, ensuring your child remains comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.

Tissue Analysis

Biopsies are taken during the procedure - small samples of tissue that are examined by a pathologist for any abnormalities or conditions.

When Is a Colonoscopy Needed?

Dr Singh may recommend a colonoscopy to investigate or monitor:

  • Rectal bleeding or blood in stool
  • Chronic or severe diarrhoea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
  • Abdominal pain that hasn't responded to other treatments
  • Abnormal blood tests suggesting bowel inflammation
  • Family history of bowel polyps or bowel cancer
  • Follow-up monitoring for known IBD

Preparing Your Child for Colonoscopy

  • Bowel preparation is required the day before (specific instructions provided)
  • Low-fibre diet for 2–3 days prior
  • Fasting from midnight before the procedure
  • General anaesthetic administered by a paediatric anaesthetist
  • Procedure takes 20–40 minutes
  • Recovery in a monitored area; discharge same day in most cases
  • Tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken for pathology

Referral & Medicare: A specialist referral from your GP or paediatrician is required for Medicare rebates on the procedure and anaesthetic.
